Best Masticating and Cold-Press Juicers

Juicing is a great way to get your daily dose of vitamins from fruits and vegetables, but some are better for your than others. Here's why you should consider a masticating juicer, and which ones are among the best.

Juicing is the process of extracting juice from your favorite fruits and vegetables, usually by means of an automatic  juicer. Your ingredients will be peeled and chopped, and processed in a machine together to give you a great start in the morning/evening. There is argument about whether juice is healthier than smoothies, but it really comes down to one's choice.

Juicing is just extracting the liquid from your ingredients, whereas smoothies blend down all the parts of a fruit or vegetable. Smoothies contain all the nutrients possible from your ingredients, but juicing concentrates more on the key minerals and vitamins.

Contrary to what you may initially think, there is some difference in the juice you will be getting from using a cold press juicer versus a centrifugal juicer. Both machines will get you fresh juice from your fruits and vegetables, but there will be a slight difference. You will be able to feel it in the taste, the texture and the color of your drink, even when using the exact same ingredients.

If it is juice you prefer every day, there are two ways to prepare it: with a cold-press juicer or with a centrifugal juicer.

Cold-Press (Masticating) versus Centrifugal Juicing

CENTRIFUGAL: Centrifugal juicers are perfect if you prefer fruits and vegetables - both soft and hard ones - but completely disregard leafy greens like kale, spinach or wheat grass. All ingredients are chopped and thrown together in a centrifugal juicer down a vertical chute, where sharp blades grind them into minuscule pieces, almost like pulp. The juice from fruits and vegetables of your choice are extracted from the pulp.

COLD PRESS: Cold-press juicers, on the other hand, work with leafy greens as well as any kind of soft or hard fruits and vegetables. This is great for people who like to keep up with their green juices every day. With a cold-press juicer, all ingredients are crushed and then pressed meticulously, until every single drop of juice comes out. You may not be getting the fibers from your favorite fruits, vegetables and leafy greens, but you will be getting the highest possible amount of juice from your ingredients.

WHY COLD PRESS IS BETTER:

When it comes to comparing the two, a cold-press juicer is preferable to a centrifugal juicer, especially if you want to include leafy greens in your everyday diet. With the same amount of ingredients, you can actually get 20% to 30% more juice by using a cold-press juicer. Additionally, juice obtained using a cold-press juicer has a longer shelf life. You can make a large amount and drink it gradually over a longer period of time.

With a centrifugal juicer, blades are used to chop your ingredients into tiny pieces. The parts of fruit become oxidized while they are being chopped up and end up giving you less nutritional value. This is not a problem with a cold-press juicer. The ingredients are pressed to extract juice; the juice doesn't come in contact with any metal or air. As a result, the yield is much purer, more natural, and will last longer.

A cold-press juicer is preferable to a centrifugal juicer, especially if you want to include leafy greens in your everyday diet, get more yield, or even if you want a longer shelf life."

Features to look for in a Cold-Press Juicer

Feature to look for:

  • Compact design so that you won't waste too much space on your counter
  • Whether it is easy to collect pulp from your juicer after the procedure
  • Number of speed options (low speed means a lesser quality juice and faster speed means less time consumed using the machine)
  • Whether the feeding chute is large and will accommodate a good amount of ingredients
  • Whether it is easy to clean and maintain.
  • Low noise
  • Whether the machine becomes heated when using
  • Whether it comes with too many parts
  • Quality of the brand's customer service
  • Price

Considering all of these features, a cold-press juicer must be able to extract juice from any kind of fruit, vegetable and leafy green - even some nuts and seeds - and give you the highest, most nutritious yield possible.

There will be no heat build up or oxidization inside the J8006, guaranteeing the purest form of juice for your nutritional needs.

You can use this juicer to not only extract juice, but also to convert nuts into nut butters, to mince herbs and spices, to grind coffee, to extrude pasta, to make food for babies, or even to make frozen desserts.

The pulp that remains at the end of the juicing will be extremely dry, after the highest amount of juice has been extracted from all the ingredients. It is easy to wash, disassemble and reassemble this machine; it won't take you more than a few minutes to complete the whole task.

What's not so good about it?

A relatively slow machine, the Omega J8006 operates at only 80 RPMs (rotations per minute). This means that it may take some time to prepare your favorite drinks in the morning. This machine is also quite bulky, and will occupy a large space on your counter.

Some customers have reported problems regarding the plastic nozzle which might crack under pressure.

Pros:
  • Quiet Operation
  • Highest yield of extracted juice leaving very dry pulp
  • Can be used to extract juice from hard and soft fruits and vegetables, as well as leafy greens
  • Can also be used for a number of other functions, i.e. mince herbs, make baby food, extrude pasta or grind coffee
  • Easy to use, disassemble and reassemble
Cons:
  • Slow machine with only 80 RPMs (rotations per minute)
  • Bulky product; takes a lot of space in the kitchen

  • Powerful 2HP motor

All the juicers from Omega come with a 15-year replacement warranty for performance and parts.

What's good about it?

The Omega J8004 extracts the maximum amount of juice from almost any fruits and vegetables of your choice. The extract you get will be full of nutrition, vitamins and of course, taste. With the minimum amount of fruits, vegetables, wheat grass and leafy green, you will be able to extract a large amount of juice. Just like with the other brands of Omega Juice, you can also use this brand to make butter from whole nuts, make baby food and grind coffee, mince garlic and other herbs, and extrude pasta.

The Omega J8004 is easy to clean. The pulp that the machine leaves behind is extremely dry and easy to remove. This model has a powerful gear reduction equal to a 2HP motor, and it comes with a GE Ultem Auger that is more than eight times stronger than the average plastic.

When you use the Omega J8004 to extract juice from fruits and vegetables, you can store the juice for more than 72 hours without it degrading or separating. This is because this model crushes and presses the ingredients to extract juice, and doesn't use a blade to chop them into pieces. Since your ingredients don't come into contact with metal, there is no chance of oxidization, and your juice will be as fresh as possible.

What's more, due to the low operation speed, there is no foam or frothing in the juice extracted.

What's not so good about it?

The Omega J8004 has a very small feeding chute. To use it, you would have to chop up your ingredients before placing them into the machine. Thus, there is an increased preparation time needed for your morning juice compared to other models. Additionally, while the Omega J8004 works well with both hard and soft ingredients, it may be difficult to extract juice from something that is more tender, like pineapples.

Pros:
  • Powerful 2HP motor
  • Works well to extract juice from almost all types of fruits and vegetables
  • Can be used in a number of kitchen chores besides making juice
  • Long shelf life of juice extracted
Cons:
  • Very small chute makes feeding ingredients difficult

  • Long preparation time needed to cut ingredients into small pieces

What's not so good about it?

Although this is a great juicer, the feeding chute is a little small compared to the amount of ingredients that the model can hold. Fruits and vegetables have to be chopped into small pieces to feed through the lean chute. This is easy with long ingredients like carrots and bananas, but a lot more work if you want to use pineapples, watermelon and apples.

Only juice comes out of this model, so this is not the right model for you if you like a little pulp in your drink.

Other features like a protective cap or a recipe book may not seem very important, but they can be quite helpful too.

These are the factors you need to look for in the right slow masticating juicer for your kitchen. Whichever one you choose, when you are buying a slow juicer for yourself, you are making a choice that could lead to a healthier life, and that is the most important thing of all.
