What Are the Exposure Tricks to Photography Lighted Objects?

by: vacuumclean   Keywords: Photography

When photographing objects such as candles, bear in mind that although setting a higher ISO will require less light to photograph an image, more 'noise' will be produced. Canon EOS 7D, 50D and EOS 5D Mark 11 each have a special feature to reduce noise.

Photographing Lighted Objects Tip #1- Exposure Timing

Exposure timings play an important role when photographing lighted objects. When we use a longer shutter speed, images will turn out brighter. When we use a faster shutter speed, actions of the subject will freeze. Finally, a slower shutter speed will result in motion blur.

When photographing holiday light while it is dark, a slower shutter speed will be most ideal. Even so, a shutter speed of less than 1/60th second will result in motion blur.

Photographing Lighted Objects Tip #2- How Can I Overcome Motion Blur?

No need to fret! There are ways to overcome motion blur. Do take note that when photographing light, motion blur appears as a result of movements by the camera or photographer.

1. Tripod

To cease this problem, use a tripod to stabilize the camera.

2. Cable Release

Using a cable release or the camera's self-timer will be an excellent additional precaution to avoid the occurrence of motion blur.

3. Built-in Image Stabilizer

There are built-in Optical Image Stabilization to reduce blur caused by camera movement. Most Canon EOS lenses and select PowerShot Models have this feature.

4. Wide-angled Lenses

Wide-angled lenses wider than 16mm will also do you good at reducing blur caused by camera or photographer movements.

5. Control f-stop

Besides exposure timings, controlling the f-stop also affects your capability to capturing great images. What you will need to do is to set the f-stop low. This is to allow more light to pass through. Examples of lower f-stop values are f/1.8, f/2.8, f/4.0 and so on. The lower the f-stop setting, the better!

Higher ISOs, Shutter Speed, and Aperture will influence the turn-out of your photography on lighted objects.

Once again, try these tips out when photographing lights and candles! I sincerely do hope that you find this article useful! All the best at your attempt to photograph lighted objects!
