Childhood Obesity - Getting Your Kids Off the Couch

Childhood Obesity - Getting Your Kids Off the Couch

In today's society, childhood obesity is becoming a growing concern. In this age of fast-food dinners and video games your child may be eating foods that are high in fat and calories and then sitting on the couch for hours on end playing video games. It may be time to get your child moving and exercising. There are several steps that you can take to help your child live a healthier life style.

The first thing that you need to do is to teach your child to eat healthier. In the world of working mothers and two-income families, it may seem that fast food is the best way to get everybody fed. In reality, there are many healthy meals that can take the same amount of time to prepare that it takes you to drive to the restaurant, sit in the drive-thru line, order your food, and drive back home. There are also foods that can be fixed the night before and placed in the slow cooker first thing in the morning. The food cooks all day and is ready as soon as you get home from work. There are many microwavable foods available at the grocery store also. Another advantage of having a microwave oven is the ability to defrost foods quickly if you forgot to pull something out for dinner.

To create a healthy meal, you should have a meat, a vegetable, bread, a dairy, and a fruit. While this may sound complicated, a plate of spaghetti with parmesan cheese, a salad, bread, and a can of peaches with a glass of milk would cover all these groups and would take about fifteen minutes to fix. Another way to help your kids eat healthy is to remove all the junk food from your house and replace it with healthy snacks. Replace a bag of potato chips with cheese and crackers. Replace those cheese curls with celery sticks smeared with peanut butter. The children may complain at first about losing their favorite snack foods, but once there is nothing else in the house they will eventually eat these healthier alternatives.

The next step to helping your children to become healthier is to get them active. The first thing that you should do is to limit the amount of time spent in front of the television. The same thing should be done with computer and video games. Once the children no longer have the television and games to occupy their time, they will become bored. You could now suggest that you all go outside for a walk or go for a bicycle ride. If it is cold outside, you could suggest sledding or ice skating. Anything that will give your children some fresh air and exercise would be a good idea.

Children learn good eating and exercise habits from their parents. You should serve as a model for your children by eating right and staying active. By including the whole family in these outdoor events will give everyone some much needed exercise and is also a chance to spend some quality time with your children, something that we could all use a little more of.

Cultivating Key Account Management Best Practices

Cultivating Key Account Management Best Practices

Key account sales people in China love to emphasize about the importance of Guanxi or relationships when it comes to managing their key accounts. But is maintaining good relationship the only criteria of gaging good key accounts practice? And assuming it's not the only criteria, but still an important criteria, at what levels should these relationships be built.

Let's take a look at what are the aspects that HR Chally recommends as optimal key account behaviour:

- Learn how to meet and interact with your customers' top decision makers.

- Never take your competitors for granted: they'll usually surprise you.

- Set realistic goals, and be prepared for the stress of last-minute problems or changes that will come with no warning.

- Get to work before everybody else does.

- Know your customers' needs and concerns intimately.

- Help customers even in areas unrelated to your product or service.

- Only bend the rules when it's necessary to service the customer.

- Remember that competitors may sometimes offer better service.

- Make sure your customers know when a problem has been solved and that they know you know.

(Adapted from "The Seven Keys to Managing Strategic Accounts" by Sherman et al, McGraw-Hill, 2003)

As seen from the above, the purpose of building good relationships, is to facilitate the above key areas so as to grow the account. This is of particular importance when you need to interact with top decision makers effectively (not just the implementers), so as to know their needs and concerns intimately.

Hence, if you want to make sure that your key accounts sales people have what it takes to manage those accounts well, you may need to train them how to do so.

However, as both you and I know, training is useless unless the new skills and behaviours are reinforced further.

How To Check Out The Competition In A Niche Market

How To Check Out The Competition In A Niche Market

There are a lot of search engines out there but let's face facts. Google is used by the majority of people in the world so if you are doing research, this is the best place to see who else is out there that you are competing with.

When you search on a keyword in Google, you will see 2 types of listings. There are the main results which are listed in the body of the page. These are pages that come up automatically (also called organic searches). I'll talk about those in a minute but for now I want to talk about paid listings.

Paid listings on Google

If you look at the right hand side of the page when you search on Google you will see a list of websites which have a heading, 2 lines of text and then the website address, or url, at the bottom.

These are paid listings. If a website is listed there, they are paying Google money every time someone clicks on the link. This is the first place you should look because if you have a competitor who is selling a product in this niche, they will probably be paying for advertising to get new customers. Check out each and every one of these sites, keeping a list and your thoughts on each one.

If there are more than 2 pages of paid listings then it is not usually worth your while to enter this niche because it will cost you too much in advertising to be seen. It is ok to have some competition though if every advertisement leads to a site that is selling a product similar to the one you want to create, you will need to rethink your strategy.

Competition can be a good thing

A word of hope. Competition can be a great thing. If there is competition in your niche that means that there is definitely demand. Look at what your competitors are doing and importantly what they aren't doing. You may be able to create a product that addresses an angle the other products don't cover.

GOOGLE FOR FREE

The next thing to do is look at all the sites that are listed in the main body of the page when you search in Google. There is no use creating a product on a topic if there is already a lot of information available for free. Keep in mind though that there may be a lot of free information but if it is only available in really technical format then you may have a market that is hungry for easy to understand language.

Take the time to look at each site on the first page of the top 10 listings. If you decide to go ahead with the topic then also look at every site on the next page in Google, i.e. the first 20 listings. Keep a list of them, especially noticing any that you could approach later to ask them to recommend your book (or other product) to their customers. Remember not all competition is bad news.

Take the time to check out your competition this week. Keep a list of all your competitors because remember, not all competition is bad. Many of your competitors may turn out to be great joint venture partners who can sell your product to their customers.

Ways To Bond With Your Great Dane

Ways To Bond With Your Great Dane

Are you looking for ways on how you are going to bond with your Great Dane? Good thing that you found this page. You can try one of these enjoyable activities to create a strong bond with your dog leading to lasting friendship and loyalty.

Walk for a cause.

Walking is a great form of exercise both for you and your dog. Take your dog for a walk daily or at least every other day. It's a great time for you and your dog to bond as well as remain healthy. You will also meet new people along the way and eventually become friends.

Go hiking.

Head for a hiking trail that allows dogs on a leash. Make sure that your dog is protected against fleas and ticks. Bring enough water as well as lunch to keep you and your dog fueled and go on with the hike.

Grooming time.

Grooming not only makes your Great Dane look better but is also important in keeping him healthy. It is one way of discovering health problems (skin, ears, eyes related problems) early on. Your dog will be happy of the time, attention and care you are giving him.

Movies and more.

Watch a movie with your dog where the main actors are dogs. Remember to have a few dog bones for your dog and enough popcorn for you to munch on while watching the movie. Some good movies with dogs as stars are 101 Dalmatians, 102 Dalmatians and Homeward Bound.

Learn new tricks.

Who says you cannot teach a dog new tricks? It's definitely not true! Dogs, despite of old age can learn new tricks provided correct training techniques are used. Your dog will be happy and busy learning the new tricks you taught him.

Make others happy.

Because of this breed's gentle temperament, you can take him to visit people in hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes, prison, mental institutions, schools especially to special education students and stressful situations like disaster areas. You and your dog can spend time together while helping other people. Inquire first if your dog is allowed in those institutions and the procedures to require for visits.

Pick out a toy.

Ask if your local pet store allows dog into the store. If so, go to the store and let your dog pick his own toy. In this way, you can be sure that your dog truly likes the toy you buy.

Too Much Attachment Is Not Always Good For Your Great Dane

Too Much Attachment Is Not Always Good For Your Great Dane

What do you think is the role of your Great Dane in your life? Is he one among your many possessions that you can get rid of anytime you want? Or do you consider him as part of your family? Dogs, regardless of breed, are now commonly regarded as part of the family. They are loved, cared and pampered just like a mother to her children. There is really nothing wrong about it. In fact, these creatures deserve to be loved, cared and pampered after all the happiness and companionship they offer you. However, too much of these things aren't good anymore when problems arise. Probably some might wonder how problems could arise because of too much love and all the good things a dog really wants.

Relationship between owner and pet is sometimes taken to a level that is not healthy anymore. This results to behavioral disease called separation anxiety. Canine separation anxiety occurs when a dog is separated from the person he is attached to. This usually happens to dogs that are strongly attached to their owners. This also happens to adopted dogs from animal shelters because of the fear of being abandoned again. Separation anxiety is also common in older dogs who, because of old age, lose their sensory perception (hearing and sight) and that they become more dependent on their owners.

Symptoms of separation anxiety

- Destructive behaviors such as chewing or furniture and pillows and scratching and digging at doors and windows

- Urinating and defecating in unacceptable locations within a short time when the owner leaves the home without the dog

- Obsessively following owner from room to room

- Distress vocalization such as howling, barking, screeching and/or whining

- Alertness to owner's every move and may whimper, shake or even become aggressive when the owner tries to leave

- Loss of appetite

- Attempting to escape enclosure such as crate, room or apartment

- Psychosomatic disorders such as diarrhea, vomiting and excessive coat licking

Separation anxiety is different from aggression. But just like in aggression, punishment is not an effective way to treat separation anxiety. In fact, it increases your dog's separation anxiety. When you see that your dog did something or acted something unacceptable upon your return, talk to him slightly disappointedly. Remember that spanking and yelling won't do any good.

Owner should keep both farewell and return greetings very low-key. Ignore your dog for a few minutes before leaving and upon arrival. Another effective thing that you should do is to change your habits before leaving. Do something different from your routine like turning the radio or television on. You can also give your Great Dane toy especially those designed to entertain your pet while you're out.

One more effective strategy to help you deal with the problem is to take your Great Dane for a walk before you leave. Walking is good not just in dealing with separation anxiety but will also give you and your dog time to enjoy each others company.
