Latest News - January 2017

Happy New Year! Hope you had an awesome Christmas and that the new year brings you much laughter and love!

Tough day today trying to choose who gets what in the JustinGuitarXmas giveaway, I wasn't expecting so many great entries and it's been real hard to choose!

Sad that 2016 managed to take another two stella musicians: Rick Parfitt from Status Quo was one of the finest rock rhythm guitarists of all time and huge personal influence when I was starting out in bands, and George Michael one of the finest voices in pop and seems to have been a really amazing and generous human being. R.I.P. I just filmed a couple of songs by George and will hit some Quo in the new year.

The new Beginner Song Course app is doing great and getting loads of great reviews which makes me very happy - we'll be hitting some more updates and tweaks as soon as we're all back at work... I should be taking time off but snuck into the studio to do some practice and film a few song lessons.

I always use New Year to change things and get back into routines... they usually fall apart by mid year but I get a good start. So I'll be doing a Dry January again, no booze for the whole month... also aiming for 30 minutes hard exercise (run, cycle or weights) every day and 60 minutes guitar practice. Also want to have an hour acoustic live set tegther by mid year so I can go out and do some shows on solo acoustic and might also start hitting some jam nights cos I've not been gigging now for ages and miss it a bit.

I better get editing and then head back home - it's so easy to fall into work when your 'job' is something you love doing, but I know for my sanity that I need to work on the balance, though it's getting easier now with my daughter because I'm happy playing with her rather than playing guitar! :) Going to try and take a whole day a week to just hang out with her and do some classes, give swmbo some time off to chill out and help develop my relationship with her.

Wishing you lots of love and laughter :) J.

Endorsements and stuff I dig..

I'm real fussy about stuff I endorse, I will NEVER ever say to y'all that I play something if I'm not using it and honestly dig it. I do not get paid to use anything, but I do get discounted or free stuff sometimes. I don't have any exclusive deals and often use things not listed below, I'm a bit of gear slut and not particularly faithful ;) Check them out, all seriously great tools for making happy sounds in your ears!

Learn Guitar - Online Review by Dave Bennett

Not all guitar lessons are the same. In the same way as all school teachers not being the same. So which to choose private guitar lessons or internet downloads. Which is the best way to learn? There are a variety of ways to learn to play guitar - the real challenge is to find out the most effective way for you.

Firstly what learning goals do you have, what you do aim to achieve, and how long do you expect it to take? Do you want to be professional, semi-pro or strictly an amateur guitarist? Also have you thought about what style of playing will best serve you best?

Realistically what do you hope to achieve in the next year?

Jam with other guitarists and musicians?

Play for friends and family?

To learn to play your favourite songs?

Guitar lessons are a strong discipline like any learning experience. Once you decide to learn this instrument, you have to persevere and stay focused. Here is a quick 'learn guitar review'.

Online Internet lessons

Before you choose to take lessons from any internet tutorial, it is best to seek out some reviews of the options available. Otherwise it is dead easy to spendout on a system that doesn't suit you at all.

How strongly do you value your spare time?

It's dead easy to waste 10 hours or so a week, mindlessly surfing the web looking out for guitar tips. Whereas if you know what you are doing and have located a strong training system you can spend that time playing guitar and learning the things you really wanted to play.

Internet lessons are definitely cheaper than private lessons, they are more convenient, at your own time and leisure. They are also in the comfort of your own home with no need to travel anywhere.

One major drawback is that if you make mistakes (without realising it), there is nobody to tell you about them! Also nobody there to ask about something you are not clear about.

Private guitar lessons

This is the most effective ways to learn, but it costs! You'll get one on one tuition, and any bad habits will be nipped in the bud. The instructor is usually well qualified and you can swap and change styles as you see fit.

It is always best to use a teacher who specialises in the style you predominantly wantb to learn. There's no point in taking a classically trained teacher to show you how to play blues guitar!

The world is full of classically trained guitar teachers who have not the slightest clue about modern music. It may also be useful to do some research on the teacher, such as famous students.

Drawbacks include being tied down to a fixed time and place, and of course the excessive cost.

The bottom line

There is no substitute for hard work no matter what you choose. If you haven't got the will to practice over and over, it's probably best to save your cash!

Caring for Your Guitar by Emre Sabuncuoglu

Online guitar lessons are a great opportunity for people who do not have the time or money to invest in lessons from a studio. Beginners, however, need to get some good advice on how to take care of their instrument. In a studio environment, of course, the instructor would take care of those valuable bits of advice. Some online guitar lesson providers provide their students with articles or files containing this information. In case your provider does not furnish you with this information, this article is for you.

First of all, when you finish playing for the day, protect your guitar by placing it into a stiff case that fits the shape of your guitar. If you do not play as often as you might like, take the guitar out of its case occasionally in order to allow its porous, natural parts to "breathe." Avoid temperature extremes, as well as environments with fluctuating humidity levels. Heat can do serious damage to your guitar. If you have central heat, humidify the air in order to keep the wooden parts supple, keeping cracks and warps from forming. Even a pan of water left near a vent will help, should you not own a humidifier. Cracking and warping can occur most often in cheaper instruments, because guitar makers often shorten the wood's seasoning process in their cheaper lines. Beginning players, of course, are more likely to have an inexpensive instrument.

That factor, together with your not having learned as many tips for care of their guitar as more experienced players, can be a recipe for disaster for your guitar. Therefore, please pay close attention to the environment in which you store your instrument. When you graduate to a more expensive guitar, the guitar will most likely be made of fully-seasoned wood, wood that has been completely dried before being used to manufacture the instrument. Furthermore, caring for your guitar will have become second nature by that time.

Wipe your strings after you play, using a duster or soft cloth. Exercise caution on the guitar's wooden surfaces. Do not use polishes or other wood care products, since it is easy to ruin the delicate finish of the guitar, or cause the wood to absorb the product. You may, however, use a very slightly moistened cloth to remove grease spots, as well as other marks. Small cracks in the face or sides of the wood are common in fine guitars. Usually they are of little consequence until they attain considerable size. Before they get to that point, take your guitar to a skilled repairer, called a luthier. If, however, your instrument's fingerboard is warped, take your guitar immediately to an expert. The repair will be costly, but well worth the investment in the long run.
