"And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up MY JEWELS."  (Malachi 3:17)

To my dear grandchildren,

My story today is about a man called "Big Bill."  His massive body, muscles and mighty strength had won him this name for miles around. He was know to everyone as "Big Bill."  He was not only a tall, strong,  bearded lumberman of the "Paul Bunyan" type, but a great drinker and swearer as well.  Decent folk avoided him; but he did not care what people thought.  He was one of the best lumbermen along the St. Lawrence river and apart from that, he lived only for himself.  "He feared not God, neither regarded man."

At the time of our story, Big Bill was sitting on a stump carving a stick.  There was to be no lumbering that day; so now he was waiting for someone to go with him for a drink.  Just then a boyish voice beside him said:
"Mornin', Bill.  Have you heard the news?"
    "What is it?"
"Why, some feller is coming to the island to preach, and they're letting him have the schoolhouse,"replied the speaker, a thin, bare-footed lad.  Then the boy added with a grin, "I thought you might be going."
"What!" said Big Bill, now thoroughly interested, "what's that you say?"
"Oh, nothin'; only some feller's going to preach in the schoolhouse."
"Not much, he ain't!" exploded Big Bill.  "We ain't never had religion or preachin' on this island, and we ain't goin' to start now - not so long as my name's Big Bill.  He finished his declaration with an oath (swearing word).

The night came for the preaching.  So did the preacher.  And so did the people of the island.  Some came to hear the Word of God; but most came to see what Big Bill would do.  He was expected to make trouble and it would be a stout hearted preacher that would withstand him.
The meeting began.  The preacher was reading his text from the Bible when the door opened and in stalked Big Bill, loaded for trouble.

The first words he heard were the preacher's text:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  (John 3:16)
Big Bill stopped and listened.  The preacher repeated the verse, very slowly and clearly, and then read it for the third time.  By the power of God, the words took hold of Big Bill's heart.

Never before had he heard such words.  The strong man was utterly disarmed by the verse and he went quietly to a seat near the front of the room.
No one listened to that gospel message with more concern than Big Bill.  At the close, the preacher went over to him and shook his hand - the hand of the man that had come determined "not to allow any religion or preaching on the island."
To his great joy, the preacher learned that Big Bill, as he sat in his seat, had given  himself to Jesus and received Him into his heart.  O the power of the Word of God!

"There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents."  (Luke 15:10)

"This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent."

"And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up MY JEWELS."  (Malachi 3:17)

To all my dear grandchildren,

We remember the incident of the Christian man who was the only one saved from a wrecked vessel after a storm at sea.  He found himself cast upon a little island, and by great effort got certain materials together and managed to make a little shelter from the equatorial storms.  He waited day after day praying God to send a ship to rescue him, and he used to go down to the shore of the little island and wave a signal, just a piece of his clothing, every time he saw a ship passing in the distance, but some way or another they never saw him.

One day as he was cooking his dinner, he noticed a ship some distance away and hurried to the shore, earnestly praying that this time they might see and come to his relief.  He waved frantically, but they went by, until at last the little ship was almost lost to sight.  Then turning to plod his way back to his little hut he was astonished to see that it had burst into flames.
He had left some embers, and the wind had set the place on fire.  Everything was burned, and then when at last he stood there utterly distressed, not knowing where he would be able to gather sufficient material to build another shelter, to his amazement he saw that the vessel was headed right for the island.

As they neared the shore they sent a little boat for him and took him on board. He asked, "Did you see my signal?"  "Your signal!" they said; "Yes, we saw your smoke, and so we came to rescue you."  God had answered his prayer, but not at all in the way he expected it, and so, some day when we get home to heaven, we shall see that may of the prayers we thought God had not heard were answered in His own wonderful way.

"And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear."

"And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up MY JEWELS."  (Malachi 3:17)

Hi to all my dear grandchildren,

Time for another story of a dog.  The title is, The "Lassie" Dog.
Tommy loved to hear or read stories about Lassie his hero dog and he constantly asked Dad and Mom the same question.
"Dad, Mom?, Can I please have a 'Lassie Dog'?"

The answer was always the same too. "Honey, We'd love to give you a dog like Lassie, but she is a Collie.  Collies need to be outdoors where they can run in a great big yard.  Our yard is way too small and a 'Lassie dog' would always be running away.
"But I'll teach the 'Lassie dog' to stay by me all of the time so she won't get lost or hurt!" he persisted.

After a few months of continually saying 'no' Dad and Mom decided that they would take Tommy to the local dog pound and pick out a 'mutt' that would be a good house dog even though it wouldn't be a 'Lassie dog'.  Tommy was excited and satisfied.
At the pound his parents explained to the old man who ran the shelter that they were looking for a quiet, loyal, easy to care for house dog for Tommy.
He smiled: "Why I've got the perfect dog for your boy.  Come on back and meet 'Fire'".

It was a real shock to look at 'Fire'.  She was an ugly, almost hairless dog with obvious burn scars.
"What happened to this poor dog?"  Tommy's parents exclaimed.
"Why don't you folks remember the dog that laid on top of the little girl caught in the forest fire up on Pine Mountain?  She saved the little girl but almost lost her life. This is that dog.  No one wants her because she's so ugly.  I keep her because I just can't bring myself to put her to sleep after saving that child's life".

Tommy had been listening and his eyes were full of tears.  "I want her!  Can we take her back with us?"
So 'Fire' came 'home'.  And she fit in perfectly never leaving Tommy's side and never leaving the yard.
Over the next few months 'Fire's' hair began to grow back and watching it, Tommy's parents became very curious about this strange 'mutt'.  Finally Dad called the Dog Pound; "Just what kind of a 'mutt' is 'Fire'?"  "Sir", the old man laughed softly, 'Fire  isn't a 'Mutt'.  Her daddy and momma' are both show dogs.  'Fire is a pure-bred Collie."

"He is altogether lovely.  This is My Beloved."

"And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up my Jewels."  (Malachi 3:17)

Hi, to all my dear grandchildren,

Long years ago I read of a conflict which took place between two Indian Rajahs.  The one defeated the other and took captive the son of his rival, and the day he was to return to his own palace he prepared to march into the city in triumph.  There was a great procession of elephants, cavalry, infantry and a long line of captives.  Among them was the young prince.  He was told that he was to walk bare-footed and bare-headed.  He was indignant and said, "What!  Go in like that!  What will the people think?  What kind of faces will they make?"  The rajah said, "You haven't heard all yet.  You shall carry a bowl of milk in your hand, and if you spill so much as a drop, you will lose your head at the close of the procession."

In a few minutes they had brought that bowl of milk, and two guards walked with him, one on either side, and the procession started to move.  On and on they went, for perhaps a mile or more, into the presence of the rajah.  And that young prince walked along, holding the bowl of milk.  It seemed as though he would never finish without spilling some of it, but he completed the ordeal safely.  Finally he stood before the rajah, "Well, Sir Prince, what kind of faces did the people make?"  He looked up and said, "Your majesty, I did not see the faces of the people.  I saw only my life, which I held in my hands, and I knew one false step would make me lose my life."

Dear grandchildren, don't let the sneers and laughter of those around you keep you from looking to Jesus.  He is the Saviour of those who put their trust in Him.  He died on the cross of Calvary to save sinners.  A mother once told her son, "Remember, they may laugh you into hell, but they can never laugh you out of it."  Christ is the only approval worth having.

"Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name."  (Malachi 3:16)

Hi, to all my dear grandchildren,

No doubt you have all heard of large ships sinking.  One story that we are often told about is the Titanic.  But there is another large ship that I would like to tell you about, it sank about 90 years ago.
On Saturday, May 1, 1915, the giant Cunard liner, Lusitania, one of the largest and fastest ships afloat in her day, sailed out of New York harbor with 2000 people on board.

It was wartime, but most of the passengers, seemingly confidant that the great swift ship could escape and outrun any enemy submarine, were having lunch.  As they neared the coast of Ireland, suddenly, without warning two torpedoes, fired from a German submarine, crashed into her starboard side, and in a very sort time the huge ship sank with a frightful loss of 1400 lives.

Harold Boulton, a young Englishman, was one of those who were saved.  When he heard that the ship had been struck by torpedoes, he quickly put on a life belt, jumped into the ocean, and started swimming away from the ship.  From the water he saw the Lusitania sink.  Later Harold was saved by some fishermen who pulled him out of the water and took him to England.  He wrote:

When the lifeboats were just about to be lowered, I saw Captain Turner appear on the bridge, shouting loudly and waving his hands.  "Don't lower the boats!" he called at the top of his voice.  "The ship can't sink.  She is all right.  Kindly assist in getting the women out of the boats and off the upper deck!"
I believe that the loss of many lives is chargeable to the captain's orders to empty the lifeboats, for later there was not time to reload them.  I saw that the second-class passengers had ignored the captain's orders and were loading the lifeboats; they had launched four of them.  This is why, I think more second-class than first class passengers were saved.

The captain made a terrible mistake.  How sorry he was later that he told passengers on the Lusitania they were safe, when they were not.    Clergymen, preachers, teachers and parents can make terrible mistakes too.  Often they tell people they are safe when they are not.  Do not rest, young people, in the thought that you are saved from judgment, and saved for heaven, until you have God's word for it.

"If YOU confess with YOUR mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in YOUR heart that God as raised Him (Jesus) from the dead YOU shall be saved."  "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."  (Romans 10:9,13)

Harold Boulton also wrote:
I asked a woman and her daughter if there was anything I could do for them, and the mother replied, "Not a thing, thank you.  We're not going to get excited, but remain clam and stay here.  The captain says the Lusitania cannot sink."  They were both drowned.
Why were they drowned?  Because they thought they did not need to be saved.  But they did need to be saved, and so does every child of Adam's fallen race.

"All have sinned. . . ." and "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23).
"Except YOU repent, YOU shall all likewise perish"
(Luke 13:3).
