Cheers gov, already have vlc player. I meant my multi media player connected to my tv. so I can watch it on tv.
I downloaded a HD(blue ray) file but mt multi media player doesn't recognize the file type (mkv).
Will I lose any quality if I convert it to avi?
WMP sucks...
and can you recommend another file type to convert it to that my media player will recognize and I won't lose any quality?

You could try and convert it to AVI by keeping the data rate high and the same resolution as the original file, but it depends on the encoder you could also use HD WMV as gives decent quality but it can take an age to encode and its not perfect.
If it is an MKV file however you can play them on VLC player
it uses its own internal codecs so it can play almost (if not all) all media file types and mkv works brilliantly on it
