You need to get the video codecs corresponding to .avi files like for example you can get XviD codecs and it should work fine, just google XviD Codec and you should find it.

Brand new laptop, Vista Home Premium, these are avi files which have worked on other laptops in WMP just fine. The sound plays, there's just no video to go along with it. Also WMV files play fine. Thanks for any ideas.

i have a video that is in avi format on one computer, i want to transfer it with a 2gb usb drive and convert it so i can watch it on a normal dvd player..i have the AVS video converter, should this work and what else do i need to do?

If they do, they will have this information along with a DIVX logo on the packaging and a logo on the player itself. Divx enabled players start around US$40.00. If you decide to go this route, just make sure it supports the most amount of formats (divx, xvid, mpeg4, etc) or it can somehow be updated with the latest codecs (playback firmware). Since you mentioned USB, I would also look for a player that has a USB connector on the front for easy access and playback. If you do not want to purchase a divx enabled DVD player, yes then you can use AVS video converter to do what you want but I would not recommended it because the conversion process is long and tedious.
