The simple fact is that avi is compressed by quite a bit, and mp4 really isn't compressed at all, so the file is always going to be larger if you keep the same quality.
You could make the file smaller by changing your conversion settings so that the new video is a lesser resolution than the original, but it wouldn't look quite as good.
