Content: There was great interest in digital media adapters and several companies are promoting them; WD, Iomega, Seagate, and now IOGear newcomer, Hi-Denvision. Today we take a look at the HD-0310 and see how it stacks up. I had the chance to test with different media formats and there were some surprises.
A Digital Media Adapter allows you to move media from your PC to your TV using the proven sneakernet networks. I had planned to use the HD-0310 as a means of transportation to television full-time registered between my home where I have cable TV and my summer cottage, which has very little TV reception.

Mode d'emploi
The product appears to be very early in the production cycle, as it came in a brown cardboard box and clear the "manual" is primarily a spec sheet.
Connectors on the rear panel are clearly marked and easily accessible.
The front of the unit provides connectors for a USB device and maps of several media. It also has the infrared sensor and a power indicator lights.
The remote is light and necessary. Lose or break and the rest of the device becomes a paper weight. The buttons are kind of bubble. It is also very directional.
There are no installation instructions in the documentation, but it seems quite intuitive, I plugged the power, the status of composite video cables and loaded with a USB flash drive with photos and videos in various formats . I moved my TV to the proper AV input and pushed the power button on the HD-0310 remote.
I was presented with the main menu. Notice in the upper left corner with the letter M Mini is turned off. Any resolution or aspect ratio, I set the device or on television to solve the problem. From this screen the different media can be selected or the remote button can select the function. I started browsing some jpeg photos from my library.
You can scroll through the list of photos and a preview appears in the box on the right. Select the photo and hit play will generate an image in full screen. If there are other photos on the camera, they play sequentially. There seems to be no way to display a single image for a long period of time.
I moved next to the music feature.
I was able to play formats specified, but as with photos, once you select a song in a list, and all the others play in turn. There was no repeat or random function. I was also disappointed that the mp3 is not over the display of ID3 tags I had painstakingly made for all the music.
Video was next.
My first attempt was to play an AVI file from my Canon camera. He did not play, even if avi is part of the specification. I was able to get a DivX encoded avi to function properly and to my surprise, the VOB files played. I was able to show a DVD Ripper, however, there was a pause between each file including vob movie. Mpeg 2 files were no problem.
The last test mode was Slide. This allows you to display photos in sequence, while playing music that is on the attached device. A secret I found on the slide show mode is that you must be there for the preview on the remote to work. Nowhere in the documentation, it does tell you that. Preview picture shows 9 thumbnails, which you can select one to view full size.
Up to this point, I was using the device with a thumb drive. It was my intention to repeat the tests using the USB hard drive. I loaded a disc and plugged in, it was said in there was "no USB support. I am going for a while. I tried several other players and got the same result. After several days, I discovered the Den Hi-Vision website features different from those on the documentation provided. Apparently, only FAT32 media format is supported. This was a show stopper for me.
In the interest of a comprehensive review, I reformatted one of my disks FAT32. He worked the same as my thumb drive. The only problem I had with the hard disk was I could not copy a video clip of 4 GB from the PC to the player because of the limitation of the FAT32 file size. Confusion characteristic of the device is that you can have both USB and memory card plugged in at the same time and use the remote control, switch between them. Because the display does not show that it is active, I was not sure that I was used. I also used SD cards and memory, and both worked just like other devices.
The device bills itself as a high definition player, so I collected a set of component video cables connected and in. 480p mode everything works as before, but when I moved the device to the 720p I was a green screen with random lines believed. Once, I managed to get the main screen, OK, but when I tried to view an image, the screen was again unreadable. I tried different combinations of the transformation of television and the unit on and off with the best result. My TV works fine with my Linksys Media Center using the component video adapter, I think there is a problem with the Hi-DEN unit.
Finally, I bought an HDMI cable and tried. It worked better than the video component, but every time I post a photo to another, it presents a blue screen for a few seconds, then re-synchronize. I did not bother to check the built in HDMI switch. Thanks to the TV with multiple HDMI inputs, it seems superfluous.
I wanted the unit Den Hi-Vision to be a winner, but unfortunately I do not think he is ready for the first time. In addition to the deficiencies noted above, many times when I pressed a button on the remote, I would "not allowed" errors on the screen. I never found an explanation for the errors and, sometimes, turn on anyway.
This device has poor documentation and the learning curve is too steep. I was also concerned that the support section of their website is under construction. With the same number of devices I suggest you look elsewhere.
