Improving Communication It's vital to talk as much as possible, but we need to be honest at all times. To pretend to be someone we're not, or to pretend our feelings don't exist won't help. We need to communicate in a constructive, productive way and stop playing games. We need to be open and vulnerable, and willing to improve ourselves. That's what it's all about.. If things were perfect all the time, there would be nothing to work on. There wouldn't be any opportunity for growth.Once we acknowledge our feelings, so we can share them with the other person and listen to his or her side of the story. Listening without reacting defensively and without judging is a great skill. The only way we can master it is by keeping our mouth shut and giving the other person a chance to talk without interruption. Once both sides are exposed, we can work towards a solution.Being vulnerable means I can take the risk to expose myself. I am naked emotionally, and this is what honesty is all about. Don't hide your feelings, don't deny them, don't stuff them down...There is nothing wrong with expressing our anger - but we need to do it the right way, without yelling and slamming doors. If we repress our negative emotions, we'll dissociate ourselves from them and they'll become even more powerful. By acknowledging them, we take a big step forward - a step towards positive change. Eventually, we'll be able to transcend our rage, which means we'll be able to go beyond it, and find out its origin, what's really causing it. We won't use this as an excuse, but rather as an opportunity to grow and become more balanced.The greatest gift we can offer our loved one is to tell him or her what we expect... Is it more love, more affection, more help around the house, more time together? Or is it something else? Does one person need to be left alone for a while? I know my partner occasionally needs space, and I am prepared to let him have it, as long as I can be assured that it has nothing to do with me. I know I haven't done anything wrong... And neither has he.
