Soundbar

Bought it to use in our camper. It works out well in a small room. DVD was a prime reason for the choice, combined with a good price/discount.

Pros

Compact simple solution to improve on plasma TV speakers. Provides a DVD player,making it a good contender for a camper.
Plays iPod also, with on screen menus. Although I preferred to go back to using the in ceiling speaker system after trying it out.
Plays TV sound. Simple connects - 1 HDMI and 1 pair of phono connectors.
Looks good.

Okays

Seperate subwoofer unit provides the power and amplification. The subwoofer is powered from the 115v, the soundbar draws power from the subwoofer.

Could do better

The lead from the subwoofer to the bar is a permanent attachment to the subwoofer, with plugs that attach into the back of the bar. It is a overly long and cumbersome cable for how I am using it. Would have preferred connectors at both ends.
Initially sound was not great, not a lot of mid-frequency, but seems to be getting softer as it is wearing in.
Sound effects are missing. There are buttons on the remote, but it adds no ambience.
The remote is not programmable, and does not switch my Sony TV which would have been convenient.

For the price, the DVD and speaker convenience it was worth it for me. Meets my expectations.

GREAT SOUND SYSTEM

The Phillips AmbiSound Home Theater Sound Bar was a nice addition to my entertainment system. Arrived in good packaging undamanged and ready to install. All went well with the provided wall mounting hardware and easy to read instructions. I did however have to purchase some longer patch cables from the flat screen to the unit due to the "in wall" routing I chose for a cleaner look. The connecting cables from the unit to the sub-woofer/power box were plenty long enough for the extended rounting. The sound and function was surprising as it replaced an existing five speaker surround sound system. The sliding door for access to the DVD player is a nice touch too. All in all I am very pleased with the units expandability for the addition of various other components. The system produces plenty of clear bass and has several audio presets for room surroundings and sound effects. Phillips also offers software upgrades for the unit as they become available by visiting their website listed in the manual. A great sounding unit that combines all my audio and playback needs in a great looking and fuctional package that matches my flatscreen perfectly!

Brother LS2125 25-Stitch Function Free Arm Sewing Machine

Horrible.

Cheaply made and difficult to use! The threading mechanism is cumbersome; it requires a pair of tweezers since the movable arm does not come high enough to get the thread in. This is either a defect of this particular machine, or the entire model. The sewing thread and bobbin thread often tangle and jam up the machine, making a simple mending job into a mess. I have tried adjusting tension but there is no remedy to this situation. I do NOT recommend this machine.

This machine is WORTHLESS. But I did get it at a fairly cheap price it was not the cheapest. The machine has classic "nesting" near the bobbin. Also there is something horribly horribly wrong with the tension. I have knotting on both sides, it's ridiculous. The machine can not sew a straight line, it takes hours to do a simple project, do not buy it.

Great machine to beat up

I bought this machine over 4 years ago to teach myself to sew. The first thing I made on it was a little shirt for my toddler. I just jumped in and haven't stopped sewing since, with the help and support of an xperienced group of sewers online. I have 3 little girls that are very close in age and I have been using this machine for over four years to make outfits and Halloween costumes for them. I have sewn everything from denim to linen, thick ruffles, layers of tulle, full, gathered, layered ruffle skirts, and God knows what else. Oh, the peter pan collared dress jacket I made of faux leopard fur and Brown corduroy (both quite thick fabrics)-I thought that was going to destroy my machine for sure! I broke 3 hand needles in half trying to put the buttons on that jacket but my machine sewed that thing without batting an eye. There were nights that I used this machine until the sun came up the next morning. I have really given this little machine a beating and my sister has borrowed it to sew stuff (seat covers for her car made from thick fluffy towels for our hot California summers) as well. I have used the satin stitch to applique on T shirts and dresses and pants.

It still works just as hard as it did the day I brought it home. I am really surprised to see the bad reviews because I must have gotten a real gem in the one I bought. I'm using it once again to make my girls' Halloween costumes this year.

I think as long as this machine is taken care of, and the right thread ad needles are used for the right type of fabric, it is fine. I have never had any problems with the tension, or thread gathering under the fabric, or thread snapping like some of the other posters. This machine has been a serious workhorse for me. I have to say it has paid for itself many times over by now!

Low Price Janome 7330 Magnolia Computerized Sewing Machine With 30 Built-In Stitches

Sturdy, easy to use

I am a first time sewer and I wanted a solid machine below $400. I wanted something I could grow into, but something that wouldn't overwhelm me. I had gone online to research machines. I was actually considering the Brother CS6000I before I had even heard of the Janome 7330. At the time there were 97 reviews on Amazon for the Brother CS6000I and I read every one. I was concerned b/c the low rated Brother reviews and even many of the 4 and 5 star reviews complained about the machine's tension and a finicky bobbin. The last thing I wanted to deal with was a touchy machine. If you read the reviews, without looking at the stars, most of them talk about the machine's quirks. I started to wonder if the Brother was trying to be too far reaching for it's price point. I was also wondering why so many were willing to overlook this touchiness that they all mentioned.

I went to SewVacDirect.com and did an online "ask a consultant" thing. I asked the person about the Brother CS6000I and the person directed me to the Janome. I had never heard of Janome before, but the consultant said that the Janome was far more sturdy than the Brother and that it was very easy to use. Still unsure, I decided to go to a store to see the machines in person.

After seeing the Janome and the Brother in action, I came home with the Janome 7330. After seeing the two machines work, I did feel that the Janome was better made and more sturdy. I felt more confident in the Janome's ability to grow with me through the years and felt it was more of the work horse that I was looking for. Twenty minutes after opening the box I was sewing. I'd never touched a machine before and I was sewing! It was as easy to use as they had told me. No weird finicky tricks to learn; just a solid machine.

The 7330 is computerized. It has a good number of stitches, including 5 different overcast stitches, three different one-step button holes, a darning stitch, and good number of decorative stitches. It has a free arm that has been great for doing the small arm and leg holes on the children's clothing I've been making. It has a foot pedal, although you can also use it sans the pedal. It has an up/down button that "remembers" if you last made the needle stay down when you stopped stitching. It also has a reverse button and an automatic needle threader. It's very easy to wind the bobbin and you just pop open the little lid and drop it in the hole. Super easy!

The instruction manual is very easy to follow and it comes with an all purpose presser foot, a satin foot (great for sewing on buttons!), a button foot, and a zipper foot. It also comes with a seam ripper, some bobbins, a brush for cleaning, a screw driver, and some plastic rings that hold the spool of thread in place.

When I told my friends that I had purchased a Janome, all of them said it was a very good brand. I found out that is a Japanese company and Janome means "eye of the snake" as it was one of the pioneers of using a round bobbin instead of a long shuttle back in the 1920's. Janome was the first to make a computerized sewing machine in the 1970's. I'm including this information b/c if you've never heard of this brand before, it's not a fly by night. It's been around for awhile and it has a very good reputation with those who know it. I also found that Janome sponsors a DIY website, threadbanger.com, which has some really neat ways to be green by reusing, recycling, and reconstructing things.

In conclusion, go to a retailer and see for yourself. It's a solid machine!!

Kids Love It - Worth the Money

My son got this for his 8th birthday, and he loves it! Assembly was a snap, since almost everything was already put together. The manual (as others have said) is a joke - they've changed the design of the cart since the manual was written, and the updates aren't in the printout (or on the web site). There's conflicting info about how to charge the cart too - but I figure it should just be treated like any other rechargeable battery. You'll need a large smooth paved area for this cart - it doesn't work too well on uneven or rough pavement, and though it can go through packed gravel, I don't think it's a good idea. So far it's been quite durable, keeps a charge for a reasonable amount of play - we feel it was a good purchase and well worth the money.

We puchased this Go-Kart about 2 1/2 years ago and our daughter still uses it today. She was 7 when we got it for her. It is fast enough but not to fast that she can not handle it. Her friends all want to ride it when they come over to play. We did have to replace the batteries about 1 year after we purchased it, but I think you have to expect that with any battery powered item like this. It will only work on hard surfaces because of the small tire size, so we have also purchased the electric 4 wheeler that is great for in the yard. You just have to remember to plug them in after each use so the batteries last longer.

Took a chance on this hdtv and regret the decision... people were reporting reliability issues with loss of picture. To be on the safe side, I purchased the set with a three year extended warranty from a local vendor.

You can now add my set to the list of failures with the screen failing to black after 13 months of modest use - just outside the Samsung 1 year warranty.

This will likely be my last Samsung. The picture quality was great while it lasted, but the demonstrated lack of reliability outweighs image quality.

I was concerned about. Swivel feature is very nice and unexpected. Very high Failure Rate for samsung touch of red HD TV

Many people are facing a black screen and TV repair bills as soon as 3 months after purchase due to poorly engineered power on circuits. These are basically the same failures from 70's to current TVs that use super-cheap capacitors to boot up and commonly fail. Bad Service and internet

Although the main feature of the Samsung 3D TV, the 3D, is very good; its INTERNET@TV is useless. This feature was to be for connecting to Facebook, Picasa, Skype, Net Flex etc. Each of these services requests you to enter a password. Although difficult with the ten key input, the intent was that you do it only once was OK. The problem is that they upgrade the TV's software at least weekly as it is a new product. When they do this they remove all of the existing computer type date and put in new - that includes all the password data you may have installed. Your passwords are lost and you must start over. Their telephone staff is very courteous. They say thing like "I can understand your frustration," "understand the difficulty in reenter data," "is their anything else we can do for you today" etc. But they can not solve the problem. It a computer type programing thing. Their forwarding calls to tear 2 help resulted in two dropped calls and two calls not returned. The customer service is courtesy but no service provided. If you must buy these TVs, get them a COSTCO, they will refund your money, SAMSUNG will not; nor will they fix this defect.

It's a good TV, sound not so - Amazon was WONDERFUL!

I like the Samsung in general. The sound quality is not great - no room for room-facing speakers. I haven't used all the features yet (like the 3d), just got it installed - which was not easy. The screen really should NOT be touched. Even your fingertip will leave a mark and the cleaner sold at Frye's in Auburn, WA was $20.00. Samsung recommends water only, but I have a friend who damaged a flat screen trying to clean it, so be careful. I can't get the remote working well, sometimes the TV comes on and not the cable and vice versa. There must be a fix for that, but I don't know about it yet. We have some tiling in the picture every time we watch. We are shopping for a sound bar. This was our first big purchase through Amazon and the process and service was flawless. I would recommend Amazon to anyone and not just for books. We will be buying a sound bar from Amazon. Love them.

I purchased UN55B8000 on Feb 14th, 2010 after my old Samsumg DLP HDTV stopped working after 5 years. The life of these HDTVs is lot shorter than that of old CRT TVs. Anyway, the picture quality is good, it depends on so many factors, whether it is 1080 or 720, compressed or uncompressed, TV channel, etc. I saw the best quality of picture while watch news (ABC, CBS, NBC, etc) over the antenna which transmits at 1080i, uncompressed. While watching Dish TVs 720p, compressed transmission, I could see the degradation of the picture quality. Sound is very bad, it hurs my ears, should definetly have external speakers. While watching dark scenes, you might see some light throwing off from sides, but it is not a deal breaker, never bothered me so far, it is minimal. Hooked up internet the very same day I purchased the TV, but didn't use it much since then, primary reason being the widgets are very slow, very bad user interface. The 240MHZ didn't help me much as I could still see blurry image for fast moving objects, I was told that it is not just sufficient for you HDTV to support 240 MHZ, even the transmission should be 240MHZ (even your HDMI cable should support it). When I visit my friends house and see their old HDTVs, I realize that my HDTV's picture quality is better than theirs.

I saw this tv in a store lined up next to several others from across the room. In comparison, the un55b8000 had a clearer picture. After installling mine, I did see the cloudy lights in darker scenes, however, that was easily fixed with some fine tuning in the picture menu. I love this tv.

Panasonic DMC-GH1 12.1MP Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Camera With 1080p HD Video

Excellent for professional video

This review is for the GH1 in shooting video. Stills-wise, it is very good but doesn't compare to the Nikon cameras and lenses we use for production stills so we've rarely used it for photography.

As a cinematographer and director making broadcast documentaries, I picked up a GH1 a few months ago as a 'suicide camera' - a lock off camera to use in dangerous industrial areas where we didn't care if it survived or not. But the GH1 proved so good that we quickly developed it as a secondary camera on all shoots - it is now a part of our standard kit alongside Sony HDCAM cameras.

There are a lot of indepth reviews on the GH1 so I'll just add some of the most important aspects from our experience...

Video quality is excellent (with the hack) and sits nicely in our shows alongside the main HDCAM footage. We use it for picks ups, awkward/dangerous places, timelapses and B Roll. Converted to ProRes or imported direct to Avid MC the quality is dependable and good.

Choice of lenses. The stock lens is pretty good - we've used it in all sorts of places. But the true gift of the GH1 is being able to use lenses from other systems via adaptors. We use ours with Nikon lenses (70-200, 24-70, macro and superwide angle glass) as well as the Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 - which gives a beautiful look. Adaptors are available on ebay and cheap. Have a play.
The stock lens has stabilisation - which is very good - any other type of lens does not. But use the thing on a tripod - or a mount for mobile work.

Rotating flip out screen - very useful for those awkward spots or lower angles on the tripod. Once you've fitted a Zacuto finder on it though it tends to droop. Jam some gaffer tape on the hinge to help. Using one of the Canon's without a flip out screen is a true pain for real world filming.

Autofocus. We tested it but avoid it. I never use autofocus on our cameras - don't even have it on the high end ones of course. Its nice that you can move the autofocus area around on the screen - so you don't have to keep your subject centered - but ultimately it is too easy for the auto to fix on something else - and in the heat of the action it isn't always obvious that it is shifting focus from one thing to another. Autofocus not available on other brand lenses of course.

No zebras - so use the histogram - it works just fine.

Can set color temp direct - dial in degs K. This is a very nice feature missing on a lot of high end minicams even.

There are a vast array of accessories for the HDDSLR world - largely because they are a pain to use mobile. But you don't need everything you see, tempting tho it is. Essentials are Audio system, ND Filter and Zacuto style viewfinder hood (I know there are other types but the Zacuto seems best to me). That'll give a good working system. Shoulder mounts, follow focus and matte boxes etc depend on your style of shooting - we have them but tend to use the GH1 with just the ND filter and a clip on lens hood.

Takes a Zacuto finder ok - if you use the Jr you'll need the special GH1 mount - available from Zacuto direct. You really do need something like this to be able to use any HDDSLR in the field - and they help in handheld stability as well so are worth the money. You can also switch them between cameras so it's not an investment only for the GH1.
The electronic viewfinder is really very good - and perfectly good enough for a lot of work. But the flip out screen allows better use on a tripod.

ND Filters. Can't get around this - you need one/several depending on type. We settled on the Singh Ray (the Fader ND is cheaper and supposed to be equally good) and it does the job nicely. Buy a clip on lens hood and you can do away with a matte box for a lot of work. The filter rotates but the clip on hood is easy to shift back into position. The 77mm thread of the Singh Ray fits directly to the front of Nikon professional glass, and accepts the Nikon lens cap.

As with audio and Zacuto style finders, your ND filter will work with other HDDSLRs so isn't a wasted investment.

Audio. You need an external recorder and decent mics. Same is true for any of the HDDSLR cams - most of which have worse mics than the built in stereo mics of the gh1. Nothing you can do about it - bite the bullet and pickup an external recorder - we use a Sony PCM-D50 because we had one around - but there are a bunch of cheaper ones available. The GH1 audio track is then used for sync - buy a clapper board and look ridiculous or click your fingers for free.

SD cards are cheap. Very. Buy loads. I love them - and have filmed with P2, SxS as well as every type of tape. Get Class 6 at least to cope with the higher data rates with the hack. Class 10 better.

I've used the GH1 in a range of environments - including the desert in 127 degrees of mid-day heat. It runs hot but still works. Battery life is good - but if it's your main camera then get spares.
It's a little small - easy to hit buttons accidentally as you use it. The menu system is straightforward. This is a very easy camera to use and I remain amazed at the quality of the video.

My darling Camera

This camera has such quality in its opticals, in its reliability and durability, it has become my darling camera for most of my outings!
The only defects listed in ratings I read before purchasing, had to do with the short durability of batteries (It is a battery guzzler). This I solved with Sanyo`s Eneloop rechargeable batteries. Two AA`s will last me for about 250-300 shots without problems. They even outlast any other batteries when I use the motion picture (with sound) feature in the camera. (Yes ...I can film moving events in very low light, such as club shows). If you want go around without worries about missing a splendid shot, also buy an 8 or 16GB memory card and you are ready for any vacation, family event or the Grand Canyon!

Battery Life Needs Attention

I am quite happy with my Canon Powershot A590IS, with the exception of it's battery life. I can put in fresh recharged batteries, or fresh batteries, and in no time, the low battery life begins to flash, or the camera turns off and asks for new batteries. This has happened more than I wish to state. Other than this small mishap, I am pleased with my camera. There are many features which I am not yet fammiliar with, but am learning.

Asus Xonar D2X Sound Card (Black)

Consider this before buying...

The card itself is great, the sound quality is superior to my previously owned X-Fi Fatal1ty but consider this:

First, many users have experienced (and, in fact, are experiencing) problems like popping sounds, messed-up channels, troubled microphone in Skype and games, system lock-ups and so on (especially in Win7) - visit Asus's forum to get the idea;
Second, don't expect much in games (if you plan to use it for gaming), Asus's GX is a kind of a joke now and is incapable to emulate EAX in most of the cases (I ended up turning it off forever because it causes crashes way too often plus even when enabled it doesn't add much);
Last, but the most important: it looks like Asus is NOT GOING TO FIX those problems. Despite their promises that the new drivers "are almost ready" and will be released "in next couple of weeks" the support for the whole line of their audio remains awful and there are no drivers for D2X on the horizon.

I must also note that on some systems (mainboards, BIOSes, etc) D2X works perfectly even with the old drivers which makes it a kind of Russian Roulette - you pull the trigger (meaning - you buy it ;) ), you find out whether it'd work for you or not :) Not exactly what I'd expect from Asus though...

I got rid of Creative for the very same reason (lack of support) and now I begin to think that going with Asus wasn't the good idea. Maybe one should try Auzentech?..

Fantastic sound quality

Disclaimer: I am not an expert, but simply want to convey my overall impression of this card. There are plenty of expert reviews on the web, which are worth reading before a potential purchase.

The sound that this card produces blew me away the first time I used it and still does. I have used integrated sound (which is obviously no comparison) and the Creative SB Xtreme Gamer before, which - although a pretty decent sound card in its own right - cannot measure up against the D2X in terms of sound quality. The D2X lets your hear things you did not know existed in a song. If you simply want to enjoy fantastic sound then this is for you. It makes the listening experience (both music and movies) so much more enjoyable. I use the D2X with the Logitech Z5500 PC speakers (highly recommended).

I cannot judge the gaming performance of this card as I do not use it for that purpose. Moreover, I do not utilize many of the features/functionalities of the Xonar D2X Audio Center so that I cannot be a judge of that, either.

The only disappointment so far has been that I could not get the ASIO driver (which comes with the card) to work with REASON 4.1. This does not necessarily imply that the card is at fault. It may very well be some funky interaction/setting within my PC that I have not uncovered yet (Asus P6T Deluxe Mobo, Intel Core i7 920 CPU, Dual-SLI EVGA GTX 260 Core216 Super-Clocked edition, ...). The Creative SB Xtreme Gamer gave me perfect ASIO (with a different PC build).

The price tag is obviously a little bit high relative to other sound cards out there (even when getting a deal), but justified in my view because of the superb sound quality.

So far I have not experienced any problems with this card, which I have owned for about a year.

Almost perfect.

First, this machine came with Windows 7, the easiest and most intuitive version of Windows I have used. The machine is handsome and very quiet with 6 USB ports and great sound. A little too much bloatware, but that is easily removed. MS Works is a real plus, since MS Office would be overkill for my purposes. But they did include a trial version of MS Office. I found the wireless mouse to be a little hesitant at times and the key board much too small. The space bar did not always enter a space on the first touch. I used the [...] mail-in rebate to buy a wired tracker ball and full sized keyboard. The screen is plenty large and very clear. I did have to find the correct angle to place the computer to avoid reflection of light on the glossy surface. (If you have a light source from behind, beware.)

Great Shades

Ok I got a replacement order from Amazon (someone put really cheap foster grants and had returned them which is what i got) in just a week or so after I contacted them (Amazon is great for customer service I think, 5 stars). I really like the shades and will get some of these for my wife soon, no more 20 dollar shades from Wal Mart! If you dont want to spend 100 to 200 for other name brands go with these, they are in fit and finish just as good.

Good shades for driving or to just be out and about. They don't hit my eyelashes when I put them on, but then again I guess that depends on your nose type. They compliment any face shape. I'm happy that I chose these shades. I think it's also a cheaper alternative than Oakleys or Ray-Bans. I'm not knocking those shades because they are really nice, but if you don't want to spend that kind of money, then Bolle shades are for you.

Great lenses - lightweight frames

I was in the market for some new sunglasses after my previous pair of Kenneth Coles broke. I really like the Bolle lenses. The polarized Axis lenses that came in my pair provide crystal clear viewing with no glare whatsoever. I love these lenses! I was a little disappointed with the heft/weight of the frames. They are lighter than the pair I replaced - which I guess is a good thing. They just feel less substantial and somehow that translates to "lower quality" in my mind. I'm sure that lighter frames are more desirable... I just need to get over it. We'll see if there's any quality problem over time. So far - I really like these glasses. Other reviewers mentioned a nice hard case, but I received the soft nylon case. Not hard, not substantial, not what I expected. Oh well.
