England wins over Estonia in Euro 2008 qualifiers

David Beckham played his first competitive game for England Wednesday night since last year's World Cup and led England over Estonia 3-0 in Euro 2008 qualifiers. At Tallinn, Joe Cole gave England a 37th-minute lead with a spin and volley from the edge of the area before Beckham set up second-half goals for Peter Crouch and Michael Owen with crosses from the right. Beckham had been dropped from the roster after the World Cup by new coach Steve McClaren, then was recalled for last week's exhibition game against Brazil. Beckham, returning after 10 months away, set up two goals at Estonia.

England (4-1-2), which is home for four of its last five qualifiers, is fourth in Group E with 14 points, three behind Croatia (5-0-2) and Israel (5-1-2) and one behind Russia (4-0-3). The top two nations will advance to next year's tournament.

Bayern midfield Schweinsteiger, misses Germany's Euro 2008 qualifiers

by: euro2008   Category: EURO 2008 qualifiers

Bastian Schweinsteiger, 22-year-old Bayern Munich midfield maestro told German magazine Sports-Bild last week that he is still weeks away from playing again after picking up a knee infection from a tick bite. German coach Joachim Loew hoped their attacking midfielder, 43-time capped Schweinsteiger, one of Germany's top performers at last year's World Cup, will be fit for June's Euro 2008 games against San Marino and Solvakia.

Because of the persistent knee injury, Schweinsteiger will miss his country's Euro 2008 qualifiers . Germany are top of Group D, level on points with the Czech Republic and the Republic of Ireland. The second round of qualifying matches will begin from June 2 and end by November 21.
