Ceramic capacitors have a solid body made of high-temperature, ceramic resistive material with bonded metal contacts.

Specifications Ceramic Capacitor:
Ceramic COG (NPO) - Ceramic COG (NPO) capacitors have a high Q, low K, temperature-compensated dielectric and stable electrical properties under varying voltage, temperature, frequency and time. They are suitable for low-lost circuits and for timing and tuning applications.

There are several unofficial, colloquial temperature coefficient designations for capacitors. The temperature coefficient is given as P for positive and N for negative, followed by a 3-digit value in ppm/°C. For example, P100 is +100 ppm/°C and N220 is -200 ppm/°C. The exception to this system is NPO where the letter “O” instead of the number “0” is used; however, the term NP0 is not uncommon. Both NPO and NP0 indicate that the capacitor is stable with temperature.

Ceramic X7R - Ceramic X7R (BX) capacitors have moderate K values and are temperature-stable. They exhibit moderate changes in electrical properties under conditions of changing temperature, voltage, and frequency. X7R capacitors are suitable for bypass, coupling, and frequency discrimination circuit applications. X7R capacitors exhibit no more than 15% capacitance deviation over a -55 °C to +125 °C temperature range.

Ceramic Z5U - Ceramic Z5U capacitors are Class III devices with a dielectric that exhibits a maximum capacitance change of +22% - 56% over an operating temperature range of +10 °C to + 85 °C.

AVX’s TAW series of fused tantalum capacitor protect against damaging high DC leakage currents at high currents. Short circuit failure mode protection is accomplished using an internal fuse connected in series with the capacitor.

When the fuse exceeds its current limit, the fused capacitor will fail safe by effectively removing itself from the circuit by creating a high resistance path of above 10MΩ. In some cases this can mean the difference between a total circuit loss and barely detectible performance degradation.

The lead spacing and form outline are very important in selecting your choice of dipped tantalum capacitor. Lead spacing is determined is offered in a few common spreads. They are indicated in the chart below.

The tantalum advantages are higher capacitance values within a given package size and stability of capacitance with applied DC voltage.

Tantalum capacitors are a form of electrolytic capacitor. However, some forms of them are non-polar, containing two capacitors connected in series (negative to negative). In comparison with aluminium electrolytic capacitors, they are for similar capacitance and volume ratings generally more expensive, with lower effective series resistance. They usually have longer life, especially at moderately elevated temperatures. For surface mount devices, they are generally smaller.

Tantalums exploit the tendency of tantalum to form a protective oxide surface layer. They use tantalum powder, pressed into a pellet shape, as one “plate” of the capacitor with the oxide as the dielectric, and an electrolytic solution or conductive solid as the other “plate”. Because the dielectric layer can be very thin (thinner than the similar layer in, for instance, an aluminium electrolytic capacitor), a high capacitance can be achieved in a small volume. Because of the size and weight advantages, Tantalum Capacitor is useful in portable telephones, pagers, personal computers, and automotive electronics.

The multilayer ceramic capacitor has a many-layered dielectric. These capacitors are small in size, and have good temperature and frequency characteristics.This capacitor is used to bypass the high frequency to ground, Above about the Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor information content.

Ceramic capacitors are used for blocking, by-pass and coupling of DC and signals to VHF range, pulse logic and timing circuits and for general purpose applications. Choose NP0 type when stability is of concern, such as in RF circuits. The monolythic ceramic are epoxy dipped. They are small in size and are used in VHF circuits, bypassing, and general purpose use. They are preferred over standard Ceramic capacitor for their small size and stability. The photo to the right both show a .1µf value at 50 volts. You can clearly see the size difference.

Ceramic capacitors are constructed with materials such as titanium acid barium used as the dielectric. Internally, these capacitors are not constructed as a coil, so they can be used in high frequency applications. Typically, they are used in circuits which bypass high frequency signals to ground. Cons: Low breakdown voltage means that the low-K ceramics (Class 1), the ones with the good electrical properties, have poor volumetric efficiency, and are usually found only in small values.  High-K ceramics (Class 2 and higher) have poor electrical properties, which are highly dependent on temperature, voltage, and frequency, plus a significant aging rate.  Unlike many other capacitors, ceramics have no self-healing mechanism.  This means that manufacturers must maintain a high level of quality control over the dielectric.  Ceramics are most cost affective in small sizes at present.  Very large ceramics are a bit of a challenge, especially in SMD.

Tantalum capacitor are a form of electrolytic capacitor. However, some forms of them are non-polar, containing two capacitors connected in series (negative to negative). In comparison with aluminium electrolytic capacitors, they are for similar capacitance and volume ratings generally more expensive, with lower effective series resistance. They usually have longer life, especially at moderately elevated temperatures. For surface mount devices, they are generally smaller.

Tantalums exploit the tendency of tantalum to form a protective oxide surface layer. They use tantalum powder, pressed into a pellet shape, as one “plate” of the capacitor with the oxide as the dielectric, and an electrolytic solution or conductive solid as the other “plate”. Because the dielectric layer can be very thin (thinner than the similar layer in, for instance, an aluminium electrolytic capacitor), a high capacitance can be achieved in a small volume.
