Calling cards vs. Prepaid calling plans

Many communication providers offer inconvenience of prepaid calling plans. Let us attempt what way make phone calls better calling cards or prepaid calling plans better and what advantages and lacks at them is.

Prepaid calling plans

Prepaid calling plans may be international, domestic and combined. You self determine character of calls for right choose plan. Usually prepaid calling plans have a flat monthly payment and give fixed number of minutes for calls from regular phones, generally of 500 to 1000. It is a service without taxes & fees and charges per minute as well as dispense from commitments and or contracts. Prepaid plan allow do not switch a long distance carrier, receive lowest rate especially comparing to the direct dial 1+ service and even phone cards. Thus you can budget and cut your calling costs.

Phone cards

On my sites I use next definition of phone cards is a telecommunication credit card used for advance pay for calling service. This card may use from virtually any phone but in contrast to prepaid calling plan may contain additional fees and charges. Talk using calling cards usually cheaper than talk on public phones taxes. Also if you use not refillable calling cards you must entering a personal identification number (PIN) on every call. Most of calling cards have prepaid credit in which the calling cards is buying with a specific balance, from which the cost of calls made is deducted. International calling cards allow you make phone calls anytime practically from any place where the phone is established.

In summary may receive next conclusion: Prepaid calling plans more appropriate if you make many low cost calls from regular phone on home. You may choose international or domestic prepaid plans depend on you calls destinations. Telephone cards are more expensive than prepaid plans but using prepaid calling cards mobility and versatility - you may calls from any phone anywhere - from home, office, street. It's cards also let make anonymous calls. Calling cards are rather useful for travelers, business mans, students and other people who goes much.

Making An International Call

International dialing codes are split in to 3 parts; IDD Prefix, Country Code and NDD Prefix.

The IDD Prefix is the international dialing code part used to dial out to a foreign country. It tells the telephone network it is making an international call. For a single country the IDD Prefix is the same no matter which foreign Country Code is dialed.

The Country Code follows the IDD Prefix. It identifies the foreign country to connect to.

The NDD Prefix is used when dialing a national number. This is removed when dialing a foreign country. The City Code or Area Code follows the NDD Prefix but the Ndd Prefix and Area Codes are usually displayed together.

The process of making international calls is made more complicated when you move from one country to another. You could quite easily remember New Zealand's Country Code for example but when you move to a different country yourself the international dialing code is going to change.

The most profitable way to go when calling internationally in choosing prepaid calling cards or phone cards. Rates are low once you pick the best plan (mainly, you need to specify the call-to and call-from counties) and call-quality is very good.

Some countries have special relationships with each other allowing cheaper international calls via a certain number. For example Moldova's Country Code is 373 and Romania's Ndd Prefix is 00 (at the time of writing). A call could therefore be made from Romania to Moldova by dialing 00 plus 373 plus the number. However it is much cheaper to dial 022 due to a special relationship the two countries have arranged.

Another factor is do you know what time it is in the foreign country. You need to make sure you are not going to wake anyone up in the middle of the night due to world time zone differences.

TimeDial.net is a website that can help this process. All you need to do is select your destination location from a dropdown box and it displays the world time, international dialing code, area code and currency converter almost anywhere. Your current location is detected from IP address lookup and it remembers your destination selection for future visits. Time Dial is the most comprehensive, accurate and simple to use site of its kind.

Talk is Cheap. Literally.

Fancy catching up with a family member in Australia? How about having a long chat with a mate in China? Chances are, making a call to either will make your phone bill rocket. But contacting friends on the other side of the earth needn't cost it - in fact, it can be free, thanks to VoIP.

Voice over Internet Protocol is a way of making free phone calls over the internet that has been around for some time, but new developments in the technology used to connect callers look set to change the way we communicate. VoIP allows you to make calls over a data network such as the internet. VoIP converts the signal from your telephone into one that is capable of travelling over the internet, then converts it back at the other end so you can speak for free to anyone with a VoIP phone number.

When the online entrepreneurs behind the music file-sharing service Kazaa launched Skype - the best known VoIP service - in 2003, it threatened to do away with traditional landlines. Anyone with broadband internet and a microphone could download their free software and speak to other Skype users for free, and to landline numbers for almost nothing. The service quickly caught on and today has more than 171 million registered users. But for many, the service proved frustrating. Picture the scene: you fancy a chat with your sister in Sydney. First you switch on your computer, then you open the Skype console and check if she's online. You click on her and hit dial. But she's gone to make a cup of tea. You try again a few minutes later.

This time she picks up and you grapple with your unwieldy headset. But there's a delay and conversation runs aground so you think, "forget it", pick up your house phone and get her straight away. It's costing loads, but finally you're talking.

Those were the bad old days when, as early adopter Michael Love, 53, puts it, some calls abroad were great quality, but others were "like shouting in a bucket". So what's changed? A new generation of phones has hit the market and the big guns of the telecoms industry have embraced and invested in technology they feared would put them out of business.

And it's not about only calling acquaintances with VoIP handsets - many service providers now offer low rate calls using VoIP technology to normal landlines and mobile phones. But not everyone is convinced VoIP is poised to take over from traditional mobile phone lines. Ben Wood, a director at the UK based telecoms research firm CCS Insight is underwhelmed. "I don't think there is a mass UK market for VoIP yet," he says. "It's appealing and sexy, but in reality mobile users in the UK have huge bundles of free minutes. They could make the switch but then they have to register, find a hotspot, work out how to connect and somehow transfer their address book. Is it really worth it?"

However, he thinks VoIP will appeal to professionals. "For business users it's immensely attractive. I'm talking to you from Dubai and if I was making the call it would be costing me a fortune. But my hotel has WiFi hotspots. If I could use those as I travel, I could save thousands." But whether you use VoIP for business or pleasure, if your colleagues, family and friends have VoIP, talk isn't just cheap, it's free. Which is definitely worth chatting about.
