Unusual Pet Options

You've decided to get an animal.  You don't have to get a dog or cat, however!  Let's look at some more interesting options...

Just because your children have convinced you to get an animal, or you've gotten lonely and decided to get one on your own, doesn't mean that you have to run out to buy a cat or dog. There are many other options out there that might fulfil your needs as well.  Although not everyone considers this - you can always get a snake!  Yicks!  Just thinking about this option makes my skin crawl, but some people might enjoy this choice.  They are relatively low maintenance.  You don't have to walk them, and you just need to shove food at them once in awhile and watch them devour those poor mice.  Children, particularly boys, will find this to be a fantastically exciting pet, if you can stomach having the thing in your house.

Other similarly exotic and interesting animal choices could be an iguana or lizard.  You might also consider some mice or a hamster.  All of these animals can fit into cages, don't need walking and can be interesting for the whole family.

For a much more subdued approach, you might find fish to be the best option.  Fish can be beautiful - they are really part of decorating a house.  And, many people find the sound of the tank soothing.  I've been in a few houses recently that have large fish tanks as room dividers - sitting on a ledge between the kitchen and family room or between the family room and dining room.  They are a great conversation piece and a beautiful way to spice up your decoration.  You might add turtles or eels (yuck!) to the tank as well.

So, these are some options for those of you more inclined to move away from traditional pets.  Enjoy your choices and have fun picking a pet that will work for you and your family.
