Really, and I mean really, unusual pets
As long as we are talking about unusual pets, let's really talk. I have seen some mighty strange animals out there in people's backyards!
So, these are probably not going to be at the top of your list, but I've seen some really strange pet choices out there. Once, when I was walking along the beach in Los Angeles, I saw someone jogging with their pig. My brother and I simply had to stop what we were doing, stare and laugh. Yep, the family pig. I assume that you can't have a pig anywhere you want - there must be rules about owning pigs that aren't on farms. But, there he was giving his pig a little bit of exercise along the beach in L.A. He had a collar on and everything and the pig was snorting away and enjoying his daily walk. Gotta love L.A.
Next door to me, I started to hear some strange noises recently. Going over to inquire, I noticed a goat in their yard. Now, this is not a farm, nor is it a big, expansive yard. But, there he was, the family goat. I wouldn't imagine that a goat would be too great to cuddle with, but they seemed to enjoy the new addition to their family. A donkey is another strange option. A group of boys near my house decided that they would buy a donkey and make money by giving rides to the neighborhood kids. Unfortunately, the donkey started going to the bathroom all over the street and the neighbors weren't too happy about this. The donkey was a short lived experiment, and didn't make for the greatest family pet, it seems.
And those are definitely the strangest family pets I've seen. I'm sure there are many other unusual options out there. I'm sure my children dream about having a lion or elephant in the backyard, but somehow I don't think this is going to happen anytime soon. I tend to think that most people have dogs, cats and birds for a reason - and that these make for better family pets!
