Deciding on the Perfect Pet
You've decided to get a pet. Now, how do you decide which kind of pet is right for you?
So, the kids finally wore you down and you've decided to get a pet for the family. Take a deep breath! This is going to be one interesting ride. How, now do you decide what pet to get? Let's take a look at a few ideas now - and there will be more to come on future postings. There are the main, traditional choices that you can make. You can get a dog, of course. Dogs are, generally, very cuddly, fun to have around and interactive. They are, however, also a lot of work. They have visits to the vet, feedings once or twice a day, training and learning to go outside, and of course, many walks.
Another choice would be a cat, which is less work, although not necessarily as much fun as a dog. Cats are more independent. They don't need to be walked. They are generally fed once a day. And...the best part...they learn very quickly to go to the bathroom in their litter box. Their box needs to be changed periodically, but you don't have to walk them. Even better - if you go on a trip, you can generally leave them at home without too much worry. The problem with cats, however, is that this independence also makes them less cuddly and playful.
For something even lower maintenance, you might consider a bird or rabbit/gerbil. These creatures need to be feed, they need their cages changed...and that's about it. Again - they aren't as interactive as a dog - but they are certainly less work. If you get a bird, however, be careful to find out how much noise they make, if they talk a lot, if you like singing in the house, etc.
These are three general - basic - options for animals. Tune in next posting for some more exotic choices and some more discussion of these choices!
Happy animal shopping.!
